Is AMAZE Amsterdam as Amazing as it Sounds?

Is AMAZE Amsterdam as Amazing as it Sounds?

AMSTERDAM, NL — Just a few miles outside the historic canal-lined city center lies a captivating alternative to the museums, markets and centuries-old architecture that define much of the Dutch capital. On a cold winter morning, we decided to take a taxi ride across town in search of something a little more modern than the cobblestone streets we’ve come to know so well; AMAZE Amsterdam is an immersive audiovisual experience that blurs the lines between art installation, nightclub and interactive playground. While comparisons to American exhibitions like Meow Wolf are inevitable, AMAZE carves out its own identity built on rhythm, light and a surprisingly personal journey through space and time.

Arrival at AMAZE is staggered by timeslot and fairly seamless. Guests are assigned colored wristbands, and placed into groups of five to ten that move through the attraction in staggered intervals. Lockers are provided for personal belongings, and while casual photography is permitted, “professional” recording equipment is not; an early signal that this experience is meant to be felt moreso than seen. Once coats, jackets and prohibited items have been stored away, guests are funneled into a lounge-like holding area, where anticipation builds as each group waits for their color to be called. Of note, each visitor will also have their photo taken before entering; at first, this step might seem procedural, but ultimately these photos will serve a greater purpose of enhancing and personalizing the walkthrough experience. These photos will also be deleted at the end of each operating day so that images cannot be linked back to individual customers.

Once inside, AMAZE unfolds as a sequence of rooms, each offering a distinct combination of light, sound and interactivity. Some spaces encourage passive observation, with carefully choreographed audiovisual programs playing out around you, while others invite hands-on engagement such as touching, moving and experimenting. No two rooms are alike, and that unpredictability quickly becomes part of the appeal. One moment you’re walking across a narrow, illuminated pathway suspended in darkness, and the next you’re surrounded by shifting colors, pulsing music and mirrored reflections that distort your sense of space. It’s equal parts art exhibit and sensory playground, with each transition designed to keep guests immersed and - dare I say - amazed.

That rhythm ultimately builds toward what staff refer to as the “big room” - a sprawling, open-ended space that shifts the experience from guided to self-directed. Here, guests are free to linger, relax or fully engage with the installations at their own pace. Bean bags are scattered on the floor for those looking to decompress. Advancing to the next room changes the dynamic from passive to active, as interactive elements like DJ stations, turntables and motion-based exhibits increase the overall energy level. Without knowing what any of these individual exhibits were called, we took to developing our own titles for each leg of the journey; so, if “AMAZE Amsterdam” isn’t compelling enough on its own, perhaps ‘space swing’, ‘party pad’, and ‘pink tornado’ might be flashy enough to draw you in!

While AMAZE is undeniably engaging, it is also relatively concise. The full experience takes roughly 90 minutes to complete, making it shorter than comparable installations in the United States. That brevity isn’t necessarily a drawback, but it does shape expectations; this is not a sprawling narrative-driven world, but a curated sequence of sensory moments. Navigation is guided primarily by light and sound cues, with orange lighting indicating when to move forward. AMAZE Amsterdam might not demand a full day of your itinerary, but it doesn’t necessarily need to. Sometimes, an hour and a half of light, sound and self-expression is exactly the reset you didn’t know you needed. If nothing else, the success of this experience serves as a great reminder that even on the coldest, wettest days in Amsterdam, there’s still plenty of color waiting to be found.
